Why mindset work didn't fix your fear of being seen

28 days to visibility mindset nervous system somatic visibility Oct 08, 2026

Mindset work didn't fix your fear of visibility because the fear doesn't live in your mind. It lives in your body, in the automatic part of your nervous system that decides what's dangerous before you've had a single conscious thought.

Affirmations, reframes and vision boards all speak to the thinking mind. The fear never got the memo. That's why you can believe, with your whole heart, that you're meant to be seen, and still freeze the second it's time to actually do it.

I know because I lived inside that gap for years.

The vision board that made me cry

Before I ever guided a single breathwork session, I was the mindset girl. I'd read everything. I had the affirmations taped to the bathroom mirror. I journaled my future self every morning, in present tense, with gratitude, exactly the way you're supposed to. I could tell you the difference between a limiting belief and an empowering one in my sleep.

And I had a vision board. A big one. My business on it. The clients, the retreats, the income, the life I wanted outside of classroom teaching.

No one warns you though. Every time I sat down in front of that board, I felt fear. Real fear, in my body. Heat rising up my chest. My breath going shallow. A tightness in my throat like I was about to be caught doing something I wasn't allowed to do.

I'd look at the woman I was supposed to become and my body would say, absolutely not.

So I did what any good mindset student does. I decided I had a limiting belief and went looking for it. I reframed. I affirmed harder. I visualized more vividly. I told myself the fear was just resistance and resistance meant I was close.

But the fear didn't move. If anything it got louder, because now I was ashamed of it too. I was doing all the work and my body was still refusing to come with me.

The breathwork session that changed everything

In 2015 I sat down in a breathwork session, expecting a nice relaxing experience.

What happened instead was that for the first time in my life I felt the fear all the way through, in my body, without a single thought attached to it. I wasn't processing the story around it or trying to mindset it away. I felt the pure sensation of decades of stored emotions, and my breath moving through it, and my body slowly discovering that it could feel that much and stay present.

When I came out of that session, something had shifted what years of affirmations never touched. My body had a new piece of deep inner knowing. Not "I am safe to be seen," which I'd said a thousand times. But an actual experience of being scared AND being okay.

That was the missing key. Somatics.

All that time I'd been trying to convince my mind that my vision was safe, when my mind was never the one blocking it. My nervous system was. And a nervous system doesn't learn from words. It learns from repeated experiences of safety.

Why the mind can't reach it

You see, your nervous system's whole job is to keep you alive. It's fast, it's automatic, and it runs on evidence of safety. When you were young it collected evidence about what happened when you were seen.

When you were loud.
When you wanted something.
When you shined in all your brilliance.

It filed every one of those moments and wrote its rules from them. Those rules live as a threshold in your body that sounds the alarm anytime you're "too loud," "too needy," "too much."

Mindset work happens in a completely different part of you. It's obvious, conscious, verbal. Beautiful for a lot of things. But when you tell yourself "I'm safe to be seen," your nervous system checks its files, finds nothing that matches, and overrules you. In the moment that matters, when you're about to hit publish or name your prices or step onto a bigger stage, the automatic system wins every time, because it's supposed to.

That's why you can know all the things. You can have the mindset of a world famous motivational speaker and still feel sick before a launch. Knowing was never going to do it.

this doesn't mean you failed at mindset. It means you were using a good tool just on the wrong layer.

What somatics does that mindset can't

Somatic work goes to the layer where the fear actually is. Through breath, sensation and guided practice, you give your nervous system a real, felt experience of being visible and staying safe, which is a very different thing from a belief about it.

Do that once and old stuckness starts to loosen. Do it every day for a few weeks and a new rule rewrites itself in your body. Thats when "i'm safe to be seen" lands in your bones.

That's when your body stops believing being seen is dangerous and starts viewing it as normal. Neutral. Positive even.  That's what I mean by capacity. Your system can now hold more visibility, more power, more money, without sounding the alarm.

This is the part that took me from being the woman who shook in front of her vision board to the woman who's guided more than 2,000 people through the same kind of shift.

Once my body could hold it, I could actually look at my vision without collapsing or cringing. Then I could take action on it, real action, the kind that puts you in front of people. Then I could sell my sacred work at a true price and let myself be paid for it. Every one of those steps had been blocked at the body level, and every one of them opened when the body did.

How to tell which layer you're stuck in

If any of these are true, the fear is in your body and more mindset work won't touch it.

☐ You've taken marketing courses and you still feel resistance to publishing your content or sales pages.

☐ You can feel the fear somewhere specific when you go to make a direct ask for the sale.
Chest, throat, stomach, hands.

☐ You get tired or foggy the moment you sit down to be visible. Go live or publish a post with your true leadership thoughts.

☐ You've done the mindset work and the results haven't changed.

☐ You've decided you want to be seen for the sacred work you offer but your body is full of resistance.

That last one is the tell. When your mind and your body disagree, the body decides. It's also why the cringe you feel when you post about your business never goes away with a better mantra.

What to do instead

Keep your vision. Keep your affirmations if you love them. Then add the thing that was missing. Daily, body-level practice that teaches your nervous system, through experience, that it's safe to be seen, powerful and paid.

I built 28 Days to Visibility to be exactly that. Four weeks of somatic training, one visibility pattern per week, with a teaching, a guided practice you keep for life, and small daily challenges that stretch your capacity a little at a time. It's the work that finally closed the gap between what I believed and what my body would let me do.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't affirmations work for fear of being seen? Affirmations speak to your conscious mind, and the fear of being seen lives in your nervous system, which runs on lived evidence rather than words. Until your body has an actual experience of being visible and staying safe, it will keep overruling what you tell yourself.

What's the difference between mindset work and somatic work? Mindset work changes what you think and believe. Somatic work changes how your body experiences events, using breath, sensation and guided practice. For fears that show up physically, like freezing or feeling sick before you sell, somatic work reaches the layer mindset can't.

Is manifestation not working because I have a block? Often the "block" is a nervous system that doesn't yet have the capacity to hold what you're visualizing. If you feel fear, tightness or dread when you take steps toward your vision, that's your body telling you it isn't safe yet, and that's the thing to work on directly.

How do I build nervous system capacity to be seen? Through repeated, gradual, body-level experiences of visibility that don't overwhelm you: breathwork, somatic hypnosis and small daily challenges. That's how 28 Days to Visibility is structured, so the capacity you build is yours to reuse at every new level of your business.
