Why do I feel cringe when I post about my business?
Sep 07, 2026You feel cringe when you post about your business because your nervous system reads self promotion as a threat. Somewhere in your body, being seen selling got filed under dangerous, and the cringe is your nervous system pulling you back to safety. It has nothing to do with your skill, your integrity or how spiritual you are. It's a pattern, and patterns can be rewired.
I want to tell you how I know that, because it took me a long time to see it in myself.
"But I'm not afraid of being seen"
A few years ago a woman came to work with me who, on paper, had no visibility problem. Over ten thousand followers. A stunning Instagram. A stack of certifications most people would frame. When I poked at her fear of being seen she balked.
"I'm not afraid of being seen. Look at my account."
She was right, in a way. She was very comfortable being seen as a soft, feminine, spiritual guide. Poetic captions. Beautiful photos. Wisdom that landed.
What she could not stand was being seen selling.
So she hid her offers at the bottom of those gorgeous captions. She wrote things like "click the link in my bio if it resonates." She kept every pitch so soft that no one could ever accuse her of being salesy, and she called that softness spiritual discernment. She truly believed she just wasn't meant to sell the way everyone else did. In fact all selling really made her cringe, "ew why can't they just surrender and let the universe send them clients?"
Underneath that was the real pattern. She was afraid of being seen in her power. Selling clearly, at a real price, meant standing in front of people and saying "I can help you and this is what it costs." Her body had decided that was too much of a risk to the reputation and identity she had built.
What she was calling discernment was a nervous system doing exactly what it had been trained to do.
"But I've studied the marketing strategies"
I want to share another client story because you might recognize yourself in her too...
Another client of mine had studied with the biggest names in online marketing. Amy Porterfield, Marie Forleo B school, Jenna Kutcher and others. She knew funnels, launches, email sequences, the works. Honestly, she could have taught the strategy herself by this point.
And every time she sat down at her computer to sell her own services, a wave of tiredness rolled over her. Resistance. A sudden need to reorganize her desk. She would write half a post, feel that hot squirm in her chest, and close the laptop.
Her explanation was that she was too introverted to market the way the experts had coached her.
That wasn't it either. She wasn't introverted. She was in a chronic state of what's called functional freeze. Her nervous system had learned long ago that taking up space was risky, and marketing asks you to take up room over and over again. The tiredness was her body finding the emergency exit.
What the cringe actually is
I've spent over 10,000 hours in one-on-one sessions with women who do sacred work, and the cringe shows up in nearly every single one of them. It never once turned out to be a strategy problem.
You see, your nervous system has a threshold for how visible it will let you be. Below that threshold you feel fine. You can post the inspirational quote, share the client win, teach the free thing. But push beyond those limits and your body starts sending signals. Heat in your cheeks. Tight throat. The urge to soften the words, delay the post, add a disclaimer, lower the price.
That threshold was set by imprints you picked up in childhood, by moments that had nothing to do with business.
The time you were told you were too much. The time you were praised for being humble. The time you got attention you didn't want.
Your nervous system took notes and wrote the rule: Never cross the line into too much visibility again.
Marketing your business asks you to cross that line every day. So every day your body says no in the most convincing language it has. Cringe. Cringe that feels like discernment. Cringe that says, "it's just not my personality to be so loud, bold, salesy."
And here you are wanting to grow your business, wanting for the right people to see your work and pay you so you can thrive in your sacred work. So I'm going to tell you what you need to know to get over the cringe that's been holding you back...
Hear me when I tell you: You can't think your way past this. You can know intellectually that selling is service. You can have the mindset work of a world famous motivational speaker. The cringe still comes, because it doesn't live in your thinking mind. It lives in the automatic part of you that decides what's safe before you've had a single conscious thought.
The 4 ways it shows up
Over the past 10 years in somatic sessions with my clients, I started seeing the same four patterns, over and over. See which one sounds like you.
1. The Striver. You post constantly and it's exhausting. You over deliver, over explain, add one more free resource so no one can say you didn't earn it. Selling feels okay only if you've worked yourself to the bone first. You're comfortable in the hard work. Underneath: if I don't hold it all together, it will fall apart.
2. The Hider. Your notes app is full of posts that never get published. You have a big message but you think someone louder already said something close, so why add to the noise. You call it introversion. You're comfortable behind the scenes. Underneath: if I'm too much, I'll be rejected.
3. The Performer. You show up beautifully, but only polished. Every post gets rewritten five times. Your prices stay soft, your pitch stays buried, and you read the room before you say anything to make sure your message doesn't offend. You're comfortable when you make everyone else happy. Underneath: if I'm not lovable, I'll be abandoned.
4. The Dreamer. You have the vision, the downloads, the calling. What you don't have is the follow through on the ordinary 3D stuff like posting, pricing and asking for the sale. It all feels so beneath the work. You're comfortable in the visioning process. Underneath: if I try to fit my vision in a box, I'll lose myself.
Most women recognize themselves in more than one. That's normal. The patterns layer, and they show up again at every new level of success. The Hider who finally posts becomes the Performer who won't say anything that could be judged. The point isn't to label yourself. The point is to stop believing the cringe is telling you the truth about who you are.
Why "just post anyway" doesn't work
You've probably been told to push through. Post daily. Do the thing that scares you. Build the muscle.
Sometimes that works for a week. Then you crash, go quiet for a month, and feel worse than before, because now you've proven to yourself that you can't sustain it.
That's because pushing through a threat response doesn't raise your threshold. It just spends your reserves. Your body learned the pattern somatically, in sensation and breath and posture, and that's the deeper layer where it changes. You don't argue with a nervous system. You show it, in the body, that being seen and paid is safe now.
That's the work I do, and it's why my clients start writing a clear offer with their true price in it and hitting publish without the three day vulnerability hangover. Not from new strategies or from forcing but from rewiring their nervous system to feel safe.
What changed for the two women above
The first client, the one with ten thousand followers, stopped hiding her prices in poetry and she started selling out her coaching spots. At first the cringe still came up. The difference was that she knew exactly what it was, so she used the somatic practices I gave her and posted anyway.
My second client, the one with all the strategies, realized the tiredness was a freeze response and started working with it instead of against it. Once her nervous system felt safe being seen selling she made her highest revenue in her business. She didn't have to become someone she isn't. She just needed her body on her side.
If you're ready to work on this at the root
I built 28 Days to Visibility for exactly this. It's a four week somatic training that teaches your nervous system to hold being seen, so you can market and sell your sacred work without the cringe.
Each week works one of the four patterns above, with a teaching, a guided somatic practice you'll keep forever, and small daily challenges that expand your capacity a little at a time. By the end you're not white knuckling through your marketing. You're doing it from a body that feels safe.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel embarrassed promoting my own business? Very. Almost every skilled woman I've worked with feels it, and the more sacred or personal her work, the stronger the cringe tends to be. It's a nervous system response to being seen, not evidence that you're doing something wrong.
Why do I feel salesy even when I'm not being pushy? Because your body isn't measuring your tone, it's measuring your exposure. Selling your work puts you visibly in your power, and if your nervous system learned that was unsafe, it will label even a gentle offer as "too much."
Can I get over the fear of being seen without therapy? Fear of being seen in business is usually a learned nervous system pattern rather than a clinical issue, and it responds well to somatic training: breathwork, guided practices and gradual exposure that teach the body safety. If you're dealing with unresolved trauma, work with a licensed professional alongside anything like this.
How long does it take to stop cringing when I sell? Most women feel a shift in the first couple of weeks of consistent somatic practice and notice they can post and price with far less bracing within about a month. The pattern can resurface at new levels of visibility, which is why the practices are designed to be reused. In 28 Days to Visibility you keep all the practices to use at every new level of scaling your business.
